The COLD Shoulder: How Changes in Climate Can Affect Crime

After some blissfully warm days before and throughout the holidays, many U.S. cities have recently been hit with a bitter cold front, leaving temperatures in the 20s or lower.

So will this cold weather have an impact on the amount of crimes committed this time of year?!

The answer is yes-- Crimes are in fact affected by the temperature, caused by influences in our behaviors during colder weather.

Lower temperatures in climate can trigger emotions which lead to depression, anger and agitation... creating an environment where crime can flourish at any time. Premeditated incidents, such as property crimes and robberies, can even increase unexpectedly in various communities and cities nationwide.

Along with implementing high-quality home security devices like theBulldog Bar ...here are some tips to prepare and protect yourself from becoming a victim of winter crimes:

1. If you leave your home or business empty for several days in a row, be sure to have your standard vacation rules in place.
Leave a light on inside and set timers for outside lights to come on at night. Also, have your neighbors collect your mail and newspapers so they don't pile up while you're gone.

2. Do NOT leave your vehicle unattended while it’s being warmed up in the mornings.
Thieves often search neighborhoods for these types of easy targets.

3. Keep in mind that darkness comes much earlier in the winter months, so always be aware of your surroundings when walking through parking lots, whether at a store or your workplace. ALWAYS park in well-lit and safe areas and if you feel uncertain, you should ask someone to walk you to your car.

4. Be aware that when there’s cold weather, fewer people are outside to witness or help you when you are in trouble.
In other words, pay attention to your surroundings at all times, keep your cell phone handy and it never hurts to have some pepper spray on your key chain!

In addition to bundling up against the bitter cold, be proactive by bundling up with these crime prevention tips as well. To implement better home security or for more tips on staying protected during the winter season, visit our website TODAY at:
