Do you or your family
believe and practice any home burglary ‘clichés’ (aka common practices which we
believe are fool-proof)?
We understand… It’s easy to do, right?! Well our team at The
Bulldog Bar wants to help you and your family to avoid implementing any
home burglary clichés, to ensure your residence is safe from outside invaders.
Home burglary clichés often enable burglars to fulfill their
operations much quicker, and with better results… so we have created a list to
help you understand and avoid practicing those many common residential safety ‘faux
pas.’
1. Your spare key is safely hidden in a fake rock or under a doormat.
No it’s not! Many thieves know about “fake rocks” and doormats as a common hiding place for spare door keys. These two alternatives for allowing family and friends easy access to your home can actually lead to easy access for a burglar as well. If a crook breaks into your home, don’t let it be a result of finding your spare key hidden in an obvious place. Try to devise creative hiding places, or better yet, give a spare key to a trusted neighbor, family member or friend.
2. Your valuables are secure when locked in a safe.
Not true! Locking valuables away in a safe is a good idea. It takes time for a burglar to break a lock or carry a heavy safe out the front door for a swift getaway, but it can be done with a few minutes. It is a better idea to securely mount your safe to the floor so it cannot be carried out the door easily. If a burglar only has a few minutes in your home, he or she may not take the time to break the safe loose from the floor to carry it out of the house. The odds are in your favor if you securely mount your safe to the floor.
3. Your sock drawers and closets are great places to hide valuables.
The sock drawer, underwear drawer and closet are definitely NOT good places to securely hide valuables. That’s because these three locations are some of the most common places sought out by burglars – especially in the master bedroom. Every renter or homeowner wants easy access to certain items in case of an emergency or home intrusion – like handguns or the $20 cash needed for tomorrow’s gas and coffee run, but the bulk of your home valuables should not be “hidden” in these common areas. Put the bulk of your home and personal valuables in a safe or two (which is securely fastened to the floor), hidden in obscure areas of your house. An interesting statistic for you to creatively consider is this: Most burglars don’t spend any time (at all) in children’s rooms.
4. The prickly bushes in front of your windows will keep the burglars out.
This landscaping idea is just not true. Burglars actually hide behind bushes in front of windows to avoid being seen by people and cars passing by. Shrubbery will not keep a burglar from entering your home. You do, however, want to make sure that your “prickly” bushes are trimmed to a size small enough to keep burglars from hiding behind them, should they attempt to peek or break into your window.
5. Your pet dog is mean enough and loud enough to keep burglars off your property.
This is more than likely not true. It is possible that your dog(s) will scare off burglars, but more than likely your dog(s) will not be successful at this. Canines are usually not aggressive enough or loud enough to keep burglars from attempting a 5-10 minute house break-in. If your “guard dog” is your main strategy for keeping burglars out, you may want to reconsider your security system.
