Break Myths, Not Doors: Our 4 Busted Home Burglary Myths!

It's time to throw these darn burglars off by addressing the 4 most common home burglary myths.

In America, a home burglary takes place approximately every 15 seconds, and in roughly 8-12 minutes a burglar can take much of what you and your family have worked so hard to accumulate over decades of hard work.

It makes sense that homeowners and renters place a high priority on securing away valuables and sentimental items in order to keep them from being stolen. It’s difficult for anyone to lose their sense of security and safety, especially in their own home, but with our help you can at least avoid getting all your valuables stolen from your home.

We care for your family and safety, so we have created our list of  4 Busted Home Burglary Myths:

(1)  Keeping lights turned on while you’re away will make burglars think someone is home.

It does not. Many times it actually helps burglars steal more items more quickly. Burglars often scope out houses by looking through windows and doorways for valuables out in plain site. If your lights are on and in plain view through windows and doors, it may actually aid a possible robbery. The trick is to turn on different lights each time you leave, or even better, have a systematic timer for your internal lighting, keeping your house lit and appearing active.

(2)  I don’t have to turn my alarm system on; I’m only leaving for fifteen minutes.

Many times experienced robbers will observe neighborhoods they are interested in burglarizing. These burglars look for patterns in behavior. If they notice that you leave each Wednesday evening for 25 minutes (to pick up your child at the local soccer field) they see a window of opportunity for possibly robbing you blind. All a burglar needs is 8-12 minutes to take most of your valuables. They will break in swiftly, go right to the common areas for hidden valuables and take all they can grab in 10 minutes. It is always best that renters and homeowners lock all doors and windows and set all alarms on home security systems every time they leave the home. It can help prevent the crime from ever happening.

(3) A guard dog will keep burglars from bothering our home.

First of all, your dog more than likely should not be “seriously” called a guard dog. Most dogs do little to keep experienced burglars away. If you have a big dog, great, but that doesn’t mean your dog will be aggressive enough to scare a burglar away. If you have to justify your purchase of a dog by your dog’s ability to fight off burglars, then get a dog that will literally eat an intruding burglar alive. You could also get a dog that will make so much loud or "yappy" noise that your neighbors will naturally be alarmed of something going on in or around your home. Otherwise, don’t think your dog or “pet” will do anything to keep burglars out… unless you own a skunk or a lion!

(3)  Home burglaries are rare...It won’t happen to me.

Home burglaries are commonplace, but suburb renters and homeowners are much more likely to be burglarized than urban dwellers. If you are willing to forfeit your family’s sense of security and lose everything that you have accumulated in all your hard work over the years simply because you are unwilling to take a couple minutes every day to make sure you are aware of you surroundings and that your home and family are secure, then be our guest. But, we know you care for your family and their safety, so keep your place locked up and as secure as you can keep it.

(4)  Security system signs and decals will keep burglars from attempting entry.

This is not true. Branded security system signs and decals can keep inexperienced burglars from attempting on occasion, but for the more experienced, intelligent burglars it can actually clarify for them what home security system to be prepared to dismantle once they enter the house. It is much smarter to buy generic security system signs and decals for your yard and house. At least with this, the burglars will have to be prepared for every security system on the market, not knowing which one specifically they will be faced with upon entering your home.

But, to be honest… the best deterrent to a home break-in is simple: keep those burglars from entering your home with The Bulldog Bar door security device.

Do you already have a home security system? If so, it likely consists of an alarm, cameras and a monitoring service. We have those too, and they’re great for alerting the police and showing them a video of the burglary in process. It might even make good evidence in court IF the intruders are caught. The problem, however, is that those systems focus on surveillance and detection; our priority is prevention.

The Bulldog Bar is a door security device that will enhance your overall home security system by placing an emphasis on actually securing your door.
