1. Your spare key is safely hidden in a fake rock or under a doormat.

No it’s not! Many thieves know about “fake rocks” and doormats as a common hiding place for spare door keys. These two alternatives for allowing family and friends easy access to your home can actually lead to easy access for a burglar as well. If a crook breaks into your home, don’t let it be a result of finding your spare key hidden in an obvious place. Try to devise creative hiding places, or better yet, give a spare key to a trusted neighbor, family member or friend.

2. Your valuables are secure when locked in a safe.

Not true! Locking valuables away in a safe is a good idea. It takes time for a burglar to break a lock or carry a heavy safe out the front door for a swift getaway, but it can be done with a few minutes. It is a better idea to securely mount your safe to the floor so it cannot be carried out the door easily. If a burglar only has a few minutes in your home, he or she may not take the time to break the safe loose from the floor to carry it out of the house. 3. Your sock drawers and closets are great places to hide valuables.

The sock drawer, underwear drawer and closet are definitely NOT good places to securely hide valuables. An interesting statistic for you to creatively consider is this: Most burglars don’t spend any time (at all) in children’s rooms.

4. The prickly bushes in front of your windows will keep the burglars out.

This landscaping idea is just not true. Burglars actually hide behind bushes in front of windows to avoid being seen by people and cars passing by. Shrubbery will not keep a burglar from entering your home. You do, however, want to make sure that your “prickly” bushes are trimmed to a size small enough to keep burglars from hiding behind them, should they attempt to peek or break into your window.

Private Eye for a Burglar Guy: 10 Tips on How to Respond after a Home Burglary

According to the findings of the National Burglar and Fire Alarm Association, of all home burglaries reported in the U.S. during 2012, non-professional burglars performed 85% of them.

Non-professional burglars are known for being highly dangerous and aggressive, especially when in your home.  

Our Bulldog Bar Team has created a list of 10 tips for you if, God Forbid, your home is ever broken into. 

If you come home to find an unexplained open/broken window or door:

1) Do not enter your home - the perpetrator may still be inside.

2) Use your cell phone or a neighbor's phone to call the police.

3) Do not touch anything or clean up until the police have inspected for evidence. 
 

4) Note the descriptions of any suspicious persons to the police.

5) Write down the license plate numbers of any suspicious vehicles and pass it along to the police. 

6) Keep a detailed inventory of your valuable possessions... including a description of the items, date of purchase, original value, and serial numbers. Keep a copy of these details in a safe place away from home - this is a good precaution in case of fires or other disasters. Make a photographic or video record of valuable objects, heirlooms and antiques. Your insurance company can provide assistance in making and keeping your inventory. 
Home and renters insurance is definitely well worth the investment if anything were ever to happen. 

7) Be a good neighbor. If you notice anything suspicious in your neighborhood, call 9­1­1 immediately.

8) Mark your valuables with your driver's license number with an engraver. Marked items are harder for a burglar to dispose of and easier for police to recover.

9) Form a neighborhood watch group. City and county police departments can help you work with your neighbors to improve security and reduce risk of burglary.

 
 

10) Consider installing a burglar alarm system in your home, and always set your alarm upon leaving your home or going to bed. Also, always lock your windows and doors when leaving your home going to bed. You may also want to consider installing extra window locks and replacing screen glass doors with more secure doors.
Also, always keep your garage door closed and locked when you are home or away. It is extremely important to call the police to report a crime or any other suspicious activity when it occurs. You have to be the eyes of your neighborhood and remember, you can always remain a pair of anonymous eyes!

Break Myths, Not Doors: Our 4 Busted Home Burglary Myths!

It's time to throw these darn burglars off by addressing the 4 most common home burglary myths. 

In America, a home burglary takes place approximately every 15 seconds, and in roughly 8-12 minutes a burglar can take much of what you and your family have worked so hard to accumulate over decades of hard work.

It makes sense that homeowners and renters place a high priority on securing away valuables and sentimental items in order to keep them from being stolen. It’s difficult for anyone to lose their sense of security and safety, especially in their own home, but with our help you can at least avoid getting all your valuables stolen from your home.

We care for your family and safety, so we have created our list of  4 Busted Home Burglary Myths:

(1)  Keeping lights turned on while you’re away will make burglars think someone is home.

It does not. Many times it actually helps burglars steal more items more quickly. Burglars often scope out houses by looking through windows and doorways for valuables out in plain site. If your lights are on and in plain view through windows and doors, it may actually aid a possible robbery. The trick is to turn on different lights each time you leave, or even better, have a systematic timer for your internal lighting, keeping your house lit and appearing active.

(2)  I don’t have to turn my alarm system on; I’m only leaving for fifteen minutes.

Many times experienced robbers will observe neighborhoods they are interested in burglarizing. These burglars look for patterns in behavior. If they notice that you leave each Wednesday evening for 25 minutes (to pick up your child at the local soccer field) they see a window of opportunity for possibly robbing you blind. All a burglar needs is 8-12 minutes to take most of your valuables. They will break in swiftly, go right to the common areas for hidden valuables and take all they can grab in 10 minutes. It is always best that renters and homeowners lock all doors and windows and set all alarms on home security systems every time they leave the home. It can help prevent the crime from ever happening.

(3) A guard dog will keep burglars from bothering our home.

First of all, your dog more than likely should not be “seriously” called a guard dog. Most dogs do little to keep experienced burglars away. If you are willing to forfeit your family’s sense of security and lose everything that you have accumulated in all your hard work over the years simply because you are unwilling to take a couple minutes every day to make sure you are aware of you surroundings and that your home and family are secure, then be our guest. (4)  Security system signs and decals will keep burglars from attempting entry.

This is not true.
