Eyes Wide Open: 5 Things Burglars Look for When Targeting a Home

Springtime is here. Summertime is just around the corner. What does that mean for the common American household?... It’s vacation time!

Most Americans need at least one week away from work per year for relaxation and vacation outside of the home... and many Americans actually take off an entire month or even multiple months to head out to the beach or a lake house for the summer.

The summer months, especially July and August, are known to many as travel times. These two months, however, make up the period of time throughout the year when the most house burglaries are reported.

At The Bulldog Bar we know you need to get away, so we created a short list to help your house look more “unattractive” to burglars.

With that being said, here are 5 Things Burglars Look for WhenTargeting a Home:”

1) Easy, quick access.
Keep your trees and shrubs near windows and doors trimmed low. Burglars look to hide behind objects while they attempt break in, so a good lighting system to shine on your house and entry points is a great investment. Also, you want your house to have some visibility from the road and/or your neighbor’s house, if possible. You can always ask friends and neighbors to keep an eye on your place when you are away, so they can contact the police if they notice any suspicious activity at your residence.

2) Homes which appear unoccupied.
Many people have several daily routines in life...and because of our tendencies to be "creatures of habit," it's imperative to also make it a habit to lock up your doors and windows every time, even if you leave your Home Sweet Home for only 20 minutes. Experienced burglars plan accordingly, in order to catch you with our guard down. If you do have a set schedule, an extremely “yappy” dog is also a great deterrent. In addition, having lighting systems which are set to random times on the interior of the house can be a great investment that may help prevent a criminal invasion.

3) Visible valuables from windows & doors.
Make sure your electronics or any valuables are not in plain sight, visible from doors or windows. Prowlers are known for typically sneaking around a property before "pouncing," by looking into windows for items in clear sight which would be an easy "snatch and run" project. Also, be mindful of random people who knock on your door asking for directions, a glass of water or for random work. Some thieves have even been known to disguise themselves in order to scope out a home and possibly unlock a window or door for future entry.

4) Lack of security signs or decals.
We know it may sound silly but security signs, stickers and decals could actually keep burglars from an attempt at forcing their way into your habitat. For sophisticated burglars, however, displaying a specific company security sign often reveals to them how to dismantle the alarm. If you do have an alarm system, make sure you set the alarm when you leave every time. Burglars can steal a lot of your valuables in just 10-15 minutes, and they could even do it while you are on your regular Thursday night 30-minute stroll or trip to the grocery store.

5) Announcing vacations on social media.
For the sake of protecting your humble abode, The Bulldog Bar Squad suggests you DO NOT announce your vacations on your social media accounts like Facebook, Twitter, Instgram, etc. But if you just have to post that "amazing picture of the sunset over the ocean at Panama City Beach,” then at least have the smarts to ask a friend or family member to house-sit for you while you are away. You would be surprised how easy it is to track down an address these days, simply with a name from a social media network!
