Peek-a-Boo! A Sneak Peek at 5 Simple Ways to Secure Your Home from Burglars

Many of us may be highly intelligent at what we do professionally and/or extremely knowledgeable when it comes to parenting or even "street smarts," but crafty burglars unfortunately seem to have hoodwinked many homeowners and renters over the years.

With that in mind, The Bulldog Bar squad wants to turn the tables a bit on burglars, by revealing a few of their tactics and offering some easy-to-implement tips to help you avoid becoming a victim of home burglary.

1. Make it a nightly routine to check your doors and windows, making sure they are securely locked. You can even involve your children in this regular routine of yours. This will help your young ones understand that they should never, under any circumstances, leave windows or doors unlocked overnight.

2. Don’t open your door-- and don’t let your kids open the door-- to uninvited strangers. Set an example for your entire family by refusing to greet guests who ring your doorbell or knock on your door without giving advanced notice.

3. Use your automatic garage opener to close the garage door when you get home, before exiting your vehicle. This will help keep any nearby prowlers from ambushing you in this part of your residence, in attempts to gain entry into the rest of your humble abode.

4. Stick around when people are working in your home (contractors, cable installers, painters, lawn care personnel, etc). Additionally, take note what they’re doing every few minutes they are occupying your property. And once they leave, check to ensure that nothing is missing and that no one has left a window or door unlocked as a way to break in at a later time.

5. Store your spare key (if it's absolutely necessary to have one) in a creative or non-conventional location. Doormats, flowerpots and fake rocks are the first places burglars look for your spare key. Instead, give it to a trusted neighbor or friend who lives nearby. And don't forget to train your children (especially teens) to keep your special hiding spots, alarm codes and other family security information private from their friends.
