Gone in 60 Seconds: Why Alarms May Not Be the Best Home Security

As homeowners we sometimes make the mistake of relying solely on one security product to protect our residences from break-ins.

If one of those devices you depend on most happens to be an alarm system... you may want to continue reading.

Here's 3 reasons why we at theBulldog Bar believe alarms may not be the best home security when it comes to keeping burglars off our territory:

1) Alarm systems allow crooks up to one minute to find your alarm panel and disable it, once they've already gained access to your dwelling.
If you think 30-60 seconds is too little time to find your alarm panel, think again. Try timing yourself coming in the front door and running to your alarm panel. Chances are you will get there in 10 seconds or less. That leaves you at least 20 seconds to destroy the alarm panel (if you were a thief), and another 30 seconds to grab a few valuables and run...before authorities associated with your alarm company are even notified. Which brings us to our next point...

2) Security alarms don’t alert the police until after sirens have gone off for 60 seconds.
If a burglar however, is able to successfully destroy or disable your alarm system before that 60-second countdown is up, then the alarm will NOT call and alert the police AT ALL. What we're saying here is this... At this point, after the damage has been done, your security alarm is now rendered useless.

3) The main point of entry for burglars during a heist is typically your front door.
Entryways like your front door are the main entrances people use when coming home... So upon being opened or simply kicked in, the alarm starts beeping and counting down for 30, 45 or 60 seconds giving someone ample time to walk to your keypad and disarm the alarm system. Unfortunately your security alarm can’t tell the difference between a burglar kicking in the door and you walking in as usual, so it treats the burglar just like you and waits 30 to 60 seconds before the alarm goes off. Scary, right?
