Ho Ho Home Burglary Prevention During the Holidays

Remember the 90's holiday classic, Home Alone? Kevin, the youngest of six kids, was accidentally left behind when his family took off for France that Christmas.

This adorable young kid ended up guarding their house by himself. In spite of the many attempts by the burglars to get in and rob their home, this kid was a little too smart for them to succeed.

They tried every trick they knew to rob this house, mostly ending in a disaster. If they had door security devices like theBulldog Bar installed during that time, it would have been a slightly different story.

Holiday related property crimes-
Larceny, burglary, and robbery are not just not limited to this classic movie anymore. These type of crimes will often increase , at least slightly during the Christmas holiday season.

One Police Deputy Director from Illinois anticipates his troops will see an increase of thefts and shoplifting during this time of the year. A person’s car or truck becomes an easy target when shoppers store some of the merchandise they just bought in their vehicles, where thieves are already watching them to make their move.

Another law enforcement official (from Oklahoma Police Department) says that many criminals tend to often strike during the holiday season because the thieves know everyone is too busy holiday shopping.

Criminals don’t always look suspicious-

While they walk around the parking lot looking for a car to break into, they blend in with the holiday shoppers better now than in the past… a very smart move indeed.

Other crimes reported-
Many other crimes will show an increase at this time of the year which include: purse snatching, purchases made with counterfeit money, identity theft, scams of many kinds, and even bank robberies.

Residences as targets of burglary-
Home robbery happens particularly when it looks as though nobody is home. It is the season for Christmas vacations, parties, concerts, and everyone is busy shopping.

Security tips for to be aware of while shopping-
. Park in a well lit area, ensure the vehicle is locked, and all valuables are out of site.
· When approaching your vehicle to leave, walk confidently with keys in your hand.
· Try not to shop alone, carry limited amounts of cash, and keep it close to or in front of your body.
· Carry fewer debit or credit cards and block the keypads when entering your PIN for security.
· When shopping online, make your purchases only from sites you know are reputable.
· Avoid displaying your gifts close to a window, where its in full view, and use timers for your lights making it look like you are at home.
